Central Philippine University’s BAHÁNDÌAN Institutional Repository launched online

The BAHÁNDÌAN Institutional Repository of Central Philippine University was officially launched in February 15, 2021. The event was held in the Rose Memorial Auditorium and streamed online via Facebook live.

BAHÁNDÌAN is the Institutional Repository or an online library for research by Central Philippine University faculty, students, and partners. It includes journal articles, CPU research publications, theses, special papers, and dissertations. It allows easy access and citation of researches.

BAHÁNDÌAN can be accessed at https://repository.cpu.edu.ph/

Dr. Irving Domingo Rio, VPAA: “BAHÁNDÌAN is the first University-based Digital Repository in the Visayas”

Dr. Irving Domingo L. Rio, University Vice President for Academic Affairs, delivered the opening remarks. Dr. Rio introduced that BAHÁNDÌAN is the first digital repository established by a University in Region 6 and the Visayas.

According to Dr. Rio, BAHÁNDÌAN can help the University in making research and scholarly output more visible to the global research community. Information in BAHÁNDÌAN can then be used by other researchers, thus increasing citations of researches. He cited that faculty citations would be an important factor for CHED’s Centers of Excellence and Centers of Development. This will also contribute in maintaining the autonomous status of the University.

Dr. Rio acknowledged the help of Dr. Reysa Alenzuela in training the librarians and establishing BAHÁNDÌAN. Under her guidance, the library has established new services in response to the pandemic, such as the Virtual Reference Services and the Institutional Repository.

Dr. Rio also thanked the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center – Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) Library and Data Bank for the invaluable assistance in providing technical support and training for our librarians and staff. He also acknowledged CPU Librarians and staff for working on the Repository.

Dr. Teodoro Robles, CPU University President: “The pandemic woke us up in many ways”

Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, CPU University President, delivered a message. Dr. Robles emphasized that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many changes in the University’s operations. However, CPU has embraced the challenges with a positive mindset.

“There was positive side of the pandemic, it woke us up from our ignorance in many ways,” said Dr. Robles.

According to Dr. Robles, the shift to online learning opened many possibilities. There also rose a need for online resources not available in the past. He mentioned Chat Bertha, a service launched by the Library to cater to the information needs of students and faculty. Even with limited physical access to the Library, Centralians can still access library services and resources through Bertha.

BAHÁNDÌAN was created to provide open, online access to all scholarly work of the University faculty and students. It can help Centralian faculty and students, as well as outside researchers, in their studies. It can also help in preventing duplication of work and plagiarism.

CHED: “BAHÁNDÌAN is a milestone”

Mr. Paolo C. Cabanero, Educational Supervisor II of CHED Regional Office 6 also delivered a message in behalf of Dr. Maura Consolacion D. Cristobal, CESO III.

CHED commended CPU for this innovation, and mentioned that the BAHÁNDÌAN Institutional Repository is a milestone. Given with the rising need for online resources and research, BAHÁNDÌAN would be a great contribution.

Dr. Reysa Alenzuela delivered the closing remarks and thanked all those who worked for and supported BAHÁNDÌAN.
